Night Ministry: Connecting the Crossroads Since 1976

The Night Ministry connects Chicago’s youth and adults in need to basic resources and opportunities for support, housing, employment, education, and more — regardless of race, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation or social status.

Health care workers travel with the Night Ministry’s customized, specially equipped 38-foot Health Outreach Bus. Six nights a week, rain or shine, it travels to underprivileged neighborhoods, building relationships and bringing services all year long.

The Outreach and Health Ministry Program of the Night Ministry is the program with which Edgebrook Lutheran Church is most actively aligned.

Once a month Edgebrook Lutheran Church volunteers gather to prepare and package 200 sack suppers. In early evening, a second group takes the packaged meals and drives to meet the Health Outreach Bus in Uptown where the meals are distributed. Not only is a good meal eagerly received by the clients but almost just as important is the welcomed gift of a kind word and a smile.

The cost of providing these meals is about $300 per month. Thrivent Financial for Lutherans is providing a $1,600 grant to underwrite a portion of the cost of supplies for the meals provided in 2011.

If you care to financially support this program, contact the church office or simply place the support along with your normal offering in your offering envelope indicating the amount dedicated to the Night Ministry.
